Our Folklore, Our Music, Our Food...Our Gifts to the World

HISPANIC FEST 2015 - Entertainment, Food, Fashion, Theater, Patriotism!

26 September, Fort Walton Beach: Over 1300 attended Hispanic Fest 2015 and everyone had a wonderful time thanks to the sponsorship of several area business, the planners and organizers from United for a Good Cause, and volunteers, young and old, from as far away as Pensacola! More than 40 vendors also participated.

ZT Motors was the Title Sponsor of this great event and their generosity and contribution to this year's festival was integral in its success.

As part of the festival, a wonderful segment took place in which the organizers honored two World War II Veterans with patriotic songs, a re-enactment of the raising of the US Flag over Iwo-Jima by the Emerald Coast Young Marines Organization, WWII era songs from the Smooth Sailin' Quartet, dancing by the High Steppers and great patriotic songs by Michael Aldahondo and Reid Soria. The Hurlburt Field Honor Guard conducted a ceremonial folding of the flag and presented it to Mr. Fred Baber, a WWII veteran who was in the audience. Also in attendance was Mr. Sam Lombardo, another WWII veteran. Mrs. Betty Dore, owner of Rapunzel Hair Studio organized a presentation of plaques to two local wounded warriors with participation from Air Force and Army active duty personnel. This inspirational segment closed out with a donation of $500 to Mrs. Kelly Hale, representative from Building Homes For Heroes (www.buildinghomesforheroes.org). The donation was a combined effort by Mrs. Betty Dore and United for A Good Cause Inc.

Another outstanding part of the festival was the Fashion Show organized by Betty Dore with help from Marcos Ortiz, owner of Pink Tree Boutique in Fort Walton Beach and Hamizadai Fereira. Hamizadai is a local professional model who worked with all the models that participated. The Fashion Show was lauded by many in the audience as a great addition to our Festival and will continue each year.

United for a Good Cause Inc. is proud to be the main organizer of Hispanic Fest. All the proceeds from the Hispanic Fest events go toward the Annual Emerald Coast Christmas Miracle Needy Children's Fiesta. The Children's Fiesta is an everything is free to all that attend Latin Fiesta and this year, on 19 December, over 1,000 children and families are expected! Hispanics have been a part of the Emerald Coast for hundreds of years with the arrival of the Spanish Armadas into areas like Pensacola.

As of 2012, Hispanics reached 53 million and are the largest minority in the United States at 17% of the total population. In Florida, there are 4.4 million, which equates to 23% of the total population.

Hispanics play a huge role in the US economy with their tremendous purchasing power which is estimated to reach 1.5 trillion in 2015!

Businesses, service agencies and other entities or individuals who enjoy the Hispanic culture are welcomed to become sponsors and vendors! This festival will provide an invaluable opportunity to reach out and market to the growing Hispanic community of the Emerald Coast and NW Florida Region, as well as the large quantities of Non-Hispanics expected to attend.

Mission

To enhance diversity in the Emerald Coast region by bringing the overall community together as we showcase and share the richness of the Hispanic/Latin American culture.

Purpose

To unite all Hispanics regardless of their social, economic, and political background and together, provide a family friendly event for the entire Emerald Coast and Northwest Florida region to enjoy!

Goals

  • To provide the public with a family oriented event filled with learning through music, dance, food, children's activities, arts and cultural exhibits from as many of our Hispanic nations as possible.
  • To emphasize the uniqueness of our culture and the diversity of the Hispanic community of the United States.
  • To create an event that showcases local and regional performers, artisans, cultural craftsmen and artifact producers.
  • Through distinct activities and exhibits, educate the youth to a better understanding of our culture.
  • To provide an invaluable opportunity for Hispanic and Non-Hispanic businesses, service agencies, corporations, and other local and regional entities to reach the growing Hispanic community of the Emerald Coast and the NW Florida Region!

Facts

  • There are 53 million Hispanics in the United States. They are the largest minority at 17%.
  • Florida has 4.4 million Hispanics which equates to 23% of its population.
  • Hispanic purchasing power nationally is 1.5 trillion.
  • The combined income of Hispanics in NW Florida is 1.4 billion.
  • The combined income of Okaloosa County Hispanics is approximately 300 million.
  • Home ownership is at 54%, and the percentage of Hispanic students in Florida classrooms (K-12) is 27%.
  • In the NW Florida, the percentage of Hispanics varies from 2.1% in Washington County to 9.5% in Gasden (Quincy) County. Okaloosa County is 4.7%.

While the percentages in the Emerald Coast might seem "small" in comparison, they still mean thousands of potential customers for local/regional businesses. For employers, it means thousands of fully bilingual workers. Even in the political arena, it means thousands of potential voters to reach out to and which could make the difference in any election!

The combination of Hispanic demographics, preferences and increased buying power is expected to benefit the following seven economic sectors:

  • residential buying
  • food - grocery and restaurants
  • retail - specifically clothing and electronics
  • education - higher learning and technical schools
  • financial services
  • transportation - automotive and airline
  • entertainment and media
